10 days Intermediate–AdvancedMay–September
10 days on the Bukit
Base on the peninsula, time the tides, and rotate Uluwatu, Balangan, Bingin, and Padang Padang when the trades are in.
Read route notes
- Base and setup. Stay near Uluwatu or Bingin so cliff-road traffic does not eat your sessions. Arrive with a soft board bag and confirm DPS transfer can carry boards. One base for the full stretch beats hotel-hopping — the Bukit is compact but traffic is not.
- Daily rhythm. Check swell and tide the night before. Mid-tide windows often open Balangan and Bingin; larger SW pulses push Uluwatu and Padang Padang. Mornings are usually cleaner before the trade wind builds. Plan two sessions max on reef days — booties and channel exits matter more when you are tired.
- Spot rotation. Days 1–3: settle into your home break and read the crowd. Days 4–6: rotate Balangan on smaller swell, Uluwatu when the pulse has size, Bingin on mid tide. Days 7–8: Padang Padang when the cove is on — it is tide-sensitive and crowded, so pick your window carefully. Use scooter hops between breaks; allow 20–40 minutes for Bukit road traffic at peak hours.
- Rest and culture day. Keep one full rest day for reef recovery or a lighter beach. Pura Luhur Uluwatu at sunset is worth the visit — bring a modest cover-up. Warung meals on the cliff beat long transfers on tired legs. A flat or blown-out day is a gift: swim the cove, explore Pecatu, or drive to Canggu for a change of pace.
- Buffer and exit. Leave a flexible day for blown-out trades, temple festivals that slow cliff access, or a swell that shifts your spot order. Confirm board-bag fees for your outbound flight early. Indication only on costs — Bukit stays run elevated near the cliff, inland Pecatu is usually calmer on the wallet.
12 days IntermediateJune–September
Bali to Lombok, two coasts
A thoughtful route: Bukit reefs first, then a south Lombok reset when you want quieter peaks.

- Split the trip. Six to seven days on the Bukit, then cross to Lombok for the second half. Base Uluwatu or Bingin for Bali — same tide-and-swell rhythm as the 10-day Bukit route, compressed. Move boards in a soft bag and photograph contents before any ferry or flight leg.
- Crossing options. Fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan to Lombok’s west coast suits surfers already in Bali with boards — confirm board policies and deck storage the day before. Flight DPS → LOP is faster and often simpler for board bags if airline sporting-goods rules are clear. Either way, build a half-day buffer for weather and luggage handling.
- Board logistics. Soft bags beat hard cases for island hops. On fast boats, ask where boards ride — deck vs cabin — and keep fins packed separately when possible. From LOP airport, pre-arrange a soft-rack transfer to Kuta Lombok. Scooter hire waits until you are settled; do not overload a scooter with a quiver on arrival day.
- Budget frame. Bali Bukit skews mid-to-elevated near the cliff; Lombok south coast is generally lighter — warungs, scooter hire, and simple stays keep the second half affordable. Boat fees and one Gerupuk morning add cost in Lombok. All figures are qualitative indications, not live prices or inventory.
- Why it works. You sample Bali’s famous lefts and reef culture, then decompress on Lombok’s south coast without abandoning consistent dry-season swell. The combo suits intermediates ready for Bukit reefs who want quieter lineups and bay boats in week two. End with a rest day in Kuta Lombok before the return flight.

A week on Lombok’s south coast

- Base in Kuta Lombok. Sleep in Kuta Lombok for food, scooter hire, and easy beach access. The south-coast hub keeps Gerupuk boats and Selong Belanak within a short ride. Simple guesthouses and warungs keep the week lighter on the wallet than Bali’s Bukit — indication only, not live rates.
- Gerupuk boat days. Book Gerupuk boats the evening before when the bay looks clean — ask your guesthouse or walk the harbour. Cash for boat fees and a dry bag for the ride. Two boat mornings in a week is enough for most travelers; peaks inside the bay shift with swell but the hire is straightforward. Boards travel in the boat with you; soft bags help on wet decks.
- Beach peaks and recovery. Alternate Kuta beach peaks with Gerupuk boat days. Save Selong Belanak for smaller swell, longboard sessions, or a recovery afternoon — the crescent is playful and less intense than the bay reefs. Scooter the coast road; fuel up in Kuta before longer loops.
- Wet-season caveat. April–October is the sweet spot. Shoulder months can bring afternoon rain and blown-onshore wind — morning windows matter more. A light rain shell and cash for rural warungs cover most surprises. Desert Point and Ekas are advanced side missions; this route stays on the accessible south-coast circuit.
- Sample week. Day 1: arrive LOP, settle Kuta, scout the main peak. Days 2–3: Kuta peaks + one Gerupuk morning. Day 4: Selong Belanak recovery. Days 5–6: second Gerupuk window if swell allows, mix beach sessions. Day 7: flexible — repeat what worked or rest before departure.

Mentawai charter primer
How to think about a boat-based Mentawai week when Macaronis and neighbouring reefs are the draw.

- Padang and buffer nights. Fly to Padang (PDG) and plan one to two buffer nights in town before your boat departure. Schedules are swell- and weather-dependent — captains will not leave into bad seas. Use buffer time to confirm board bags arrived intact, buy seasickness remedies, and sync with camp or charter staff on WhatsApp.
- Boat to camp. Transfers run by ferry or charter speedboat depending on operator and season. Boards travel on deck or cabin racks — robust soft bags and spare fins are essential. Treat the crossing as part of the trip: hydration, seasickness kit, and dry bags for electronics. Remote repairs are limited once you are in the islands.
- Swell-led daily rotation. Treat the itinerary as swell-led — captains choose reefs daily based on wind, tide, and groundswell. Macaronis is the anchor left but neighbouring mechanical reefs fill the week. Mornings are prime; afternoon onshores or wind can shut options down. Flexibility is a feature, not a bug.
- Gear redundancy. Pack a step-up and an everyday board — reef breaks are unforgiving. Reef booties, tropical wax, a reef-cut kit, and backup leashes matter more here than an extra t-shirt. Download forecasts and offline maps before connectivity thins. Cash and backup power for remote stays are standard kit.
- Cost frame and fit. Mentawai trips skew elevated: boat logistics, camp packages, and remote supply chains dominate cost — indication only, not a booking quote. Best for surfers already comfortable in hollow reef barrels. Budget travelers exist via longer ferry routes, but expect package pricing. This is not a hotel-hop destination; commit to the boat-based rhythm.
