Flights and board bags
Most carriers treat surfboards as sporting goods — confirm piece limits, weight, and fees before you book. Garuda, Lion Air, and regional carriers each have different rules; check the sporting-goods page, not just standard baggage. A sturdy soft bag with foam at the nose and tail beats a hard case for island hops — hard cases crack on rough tarmac and do not fit boat decks. Label the bag clearly with name and phone.

Insurance and claims
Photograph your boards and bag before every flight leg — nose, tail, rails, and any existing dings. Keep airline baggage tags until you leave the country. Travel insurance that covers sporting equipment is worth the read; many policies exclude boards unless you declare them. If damage happens, report at the airport desk before you exit — delays weaken claims.

Fast boat vs slow ferry
Bali–Lombok fast boats from Padang Bai or Serangan are quicker but board policies vary by operator — ask at booking whether boards ride on deck or in a luggage pile. Slow public ferries are cheaper and often more forgiving for oversized bags, but schedules are looser and crossings longer. Soft bags help in crowded luggage stacks either way. Confirm the landing port on Lombok matches your transfer plan.

Boards fly to Padang as checked sporting goods, then transfer by speedboat or ferry to camp. Deck storage is common — strap boards well and keep fins in a separate bag inside the board bag. Seasickness on the crossing is real; pack remedies and keep electronics in dry bags. Remote camps have limited repair shops — spare fins and wax are not optional.

Scooters are fine for a single shortboard on quiet Bukit or Kuta Lombok roads; use soft racks or a car for quivers and wet-season rain. Never leave boards unattended on cliff parking without a lock and local awareness. Grab and private drivers with soft racks handle airport runs well — confirm board capacity when you book.
