Start on sand
Kuta Beach remains the classic learner beach: soft bottom, peaks that shift with the sandbanks, and plenty of space on quiet mornings. Build paddle fitness and basic etiquette here before moving to reef.

Canggu progression
Batu Bolong and nearby Canggu peaks offer a step up — more power, more crowd, still more forgiving than cliff reefs. Go with a local school if the lineup feels intimidating.

What to skip early
Uluwatu, Bingin, and Padang Padang ask for reef awareness and confident wave reading. Visit them to watch first; surf them when your takeoffs and wipeouts are under control.
