Sumbawa is markedly less developed for tourism than Java or Bali, and ATM/card infrastructure is weaker. Cash is essential for surf camps, warungs, scooter rental, drivers, and airport porters. Bring more than you expect to need.

Sort your rupiah before you reach the surf. For West Sumbawa (Maluk/Sekongkang/Scar Reef/Yo-Yo's), withdraw in Taliwang or Maluk, which have bank branches and ATMs, on the way south. For Lakey Peak, take out cash at Bima airport or in Dompu — the last town with reliable ATMs, about an hour before the break — because there are no ATMs at Lakey and cards aren't accepted. Carry enough for your whole stay plus a buffer, keep small notes for warungs and scooter rental, and stash backup cash separately.
Because ATMs are unreliable and cards mostly won't work, treat a Sumbawa surf trip as a bring-your-full-budget-in-cash exercise, topped up in the last regency town. Power outages are common in surf villages like Lakey, which can knock out the occasional card/QRIS terminal that does exist — another reason to hold cash. Note the Poto Tano (Sumbawa)–Kayangan (Lombok) ferry if arriving overland from Lombok, and the Sape–Labuan Bajo route if continuing east.
Best handled before arrival — exchange in Bali/Lombok or a major airport. Dedicated money changers are scarce on Sumbawa; use ATMs in regency towns instead.
