Nias is effectively a cash economy for surf travelers. Gunungsitoli (the main town and airport hub) has the island's best banking; south Nias surf areas and the Hinako Islands are cash-first to cash-only. Bring ample rupiah.

Withdraw all the cash you'll need in Gunungsitoli immediately after you land at Binaka Airport (BNI and Mandiri have branches there) — it is the last reliable withdrawal point for the whole island. It's a 2.5–3 hour drive south to Sorake/Lagundri, where there are no beach ATMs and cards are effectively useless; the machines in Teluk Dalam town are an emergency-only backup that may reject foreign cards. If you're heading to Asu or Bawa in the Hinako Islands, treat them as cash-only: your camp is pre-paid, but tips, extras, and incidentals must be cash carried in from Gunungsitoli or Medan. Carry a mix of notes and keep a backup stash separate.
Plan to bring the full on-island budget in cash, topped up in Gunungsitoli. For the Hinakos especially, there is no way to get more cash once you're on the island, so overestimate. Bring cash from Medan (Kualanamu) as a first buffer, then top up in Gunungsitoli. Foreign-card ATM fees apply (Mandiri Rp50,000 from 22 Feb 2026; some BRI ATMs ~3%), so larger single withdrawals reduce cost.
Best rates are on the Sumatran mainland (Medan) or in Gunungsitoli. Essentially none at the surf breaks. Exchange in Medan or Gunungsitoli before heading south or to the islands.
